Gen Player: Your Media Collection, Across Your Devices
Sometimes we watch a quick video on our phones, follow a series on an iPad, or settle in for a movie on a Mac or TV. We built Gen Player for those everyday moments. Available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV, it gives you a convenient way to watch your own media on each device.
Gen Player brings local files, NAS storage, and media libraries into one app. Play videos stored on your device, access remote files over SMB or WebDAV, or connect to Jellyfin, Emby, and Plex to browse your collection by poster and category. You can adjust subtitles, audio tracks, playback speed, and aspect ratio as needed. Playback history helps you return to something you haven't finished, and favorites keep the things you love easy to find.
Each device has its own way of doing things. Phones and tablets are built around touch, the Mac uses a keyboard and mouse, and Apple TV needs to work well with a remote from across the room. We keep refining the details on each platform, from browsing and switching subtitles to returning to where you were. Small things, but ones you notice every day.
Gen Player is also a hands-on experiment in vibe coding. We use AI to help write and revise code, then keep making changes based on what we find through everyday use. Many improvements start with a simple thought: “This feels a little awkward. Could we make it better?”
If you keep movies, shows, and music on your own devices or NAS, give Gen Player a try. We'd love to hear what works for you and what could be better.
